Magento 2 webshop development means designing, building and continuously running a shop on an open-source, enterprise-grade e-commerce system. Magento 2 is developed by Adobe and suits companies that manage thousands of products, sell in several languages or currencies, or need complex pricing and B2B features. A rollout runs between €5,000 and €150,000 net, taking from 3 weeks to 9 months depending on the size of the system and the number of integrations. Magento 2 requires a dedicated Magento VPS server and regular maintenance; in return it gives you a shop that supports growth for years without having to change systems.

02 / THE SYSTEM

Why is Magento 2 one of the strongest e-commerce engines for larger webshops?

Magento 2 is a robust, enterprise-grade e-commerce engine maintained by an international development team and used daily by tens of thousands of shops worldwide. Adobe's acquisition secured its long-term support. Magento 2 is a complex e-commerce system that gives a stable foundation to high-traffic shops handling thousands or even hundreds of thousands of products.

One of the greatest advantages of Magento 2 is its excellent customisability and feature-rich core. A multilingual, multi-country, multi-currency shop can be managed from a single admin interface, even running on one server. The system natively supports advanced pricing, promotions, permissions and scalable operation.

It was originally built for large enterprises, but with the right optimisation and configuration it is an accessible and sustainable solution for Hungarian small and medium businesses too. Magento 2 is an ideal choice for anyone looking for a future-proof shop system that can grow and keep pace with new technologies and business needs.

03 / DECISION POINT

Who is the Magento 2 shop system for?

Magento 2 is recommended mainly for medium-sized and larger companies, where the main consideration is no longer just launching but long-term stability, scalability and operational safety.

Rolling out Magento 2 costs more than the simpler shop engines: the initial development and infrastructure needs are higher, and configuring it properly takes expert knowledge. That investment pays off over the long run, because a well-built Magento system rarely needs a major rebuild later and runs stably and reliably for years.

Magento 2 is an ideal choice if:

  • you work with a larger range of products (from thousands to hundreds of thousands),
  • fast operation matters even under heavy traffic,
  • you plan multilingual sales across several countries,
  • you use complex pricing, permissions or B2B features,
  • you are planning for the long term rather than changing systems every year.
WHEN ANOTHER SOLUTION IS BETTER

Who should avoid the Magento 2 shop system?

Magento 2 is an extremely powerful and flexible e-commerce engine, but it is not the ideal choice for every business. In certain cases other solutions are more efficient, faster to launch and more cost-effective.

Magento 2 is not recommended if:

  • You are starting on a limited budget. Magento 2 comes with higher upfront costs: development, a VPS server, maintenance and expert support are all needed. On a small budget that can be a disproportionate burden.
  • You need a shop that launches fast with minimal setup. If you want to be live within days, with few products and basic features, Magento may be too complex.
  • You work with a small product count and low traffic. With a few dozen or a few hundred products most of Magento's capabilities stay unused.
  • There is no capacity for regular maintenance. Although a well-built Magento system is stable over the long run, it needs periodic updates, version tracking and technical supervision.
  • You want simple administration without technical background. The Magento admin is powerful and clean, but more complex than that of simple shop engines, so it may take some learning.

If, on the other hand, you want a shop on a smaller budget with a fast launch, other solutions are worth considering:

01 / WOOCOMMERCE

For smaller shops with simple needs, on WordPress.

02 / WSHOP OR PRESTASHOP

For medium-sized stores with a faster launch: our own WShop or PrestaShop.

03 / CUSTOM DEVELOPMENT

For special business logic, where off-the-shelf systems are not enough.

Magento 2 is not the cheapest solution, but it is one of the most stable and most durable e-commerce systems. It is for those who take online selling seriously and want a platform that supports growth rather than limiting it.

What is Magento?

Magento is a high-performance, open-source e-commerce engine developed by Varien, whose first version appeared in March 2008. The platform quickly became an industry standard for complex, scalable e-commerce solutions.

Over its history Magento passed into eBay's ownership, then in 2015 Permira bought it and continued developing the Community (free) and Enterprise (paid) editions as Magento Inc. In 2018 Adobe acquired the whole platform, which has operated as Adobe Commerce ever since.

With more than 15 years behind it, continuous updates, strong corporate backing and wide integration options, Magento is an ideal choice for medium and large webshops.

Popular Magento modules

One of Magento's greatest strengths is its extensive modular structure: for the most commonly used functions there are ready-made, proven extensions. These cover payment solutions, shipping methods, invoicing, marketing, SEO and analytics among others.

If a webshop needs custom behaviour or special business logic, that is no obstacle either: with custom Magento modules the system can be tailored precisely to the business. Our team has already built a number of in-house Magento modules that run stably, scalably and reliably over the long term in Magento webshops.

Magento 2 development and webshop builds

Building a Magento webshop is not a matter of picking a template but of mapping business processes onto code. That needs a Magento 2 developer team that knows not only the system but the specifics of the Hungarian market too: NAV Online Invoice, local payment gateways, courier pickup points, price comparison and Google Shopping feeds. WebPot DEV runs the whole Magento 2 development process, from the first survey to ongoing operation.

What does a Magento 2 developer do?

The work of a Magento 2 developer goes far beyond customising the look. The system is modular: every custom business need is implemented in its own module, so that the shop survives later version upgrades. An experienced Magento developer therefore does not rewrite the core files but reaches into the system through plugin, observer and preference mechanisms, which keeps the Magento 2 shop upgradable for years.

The daily work usually spans three layers: PHP module development and data modelling on the back end, Luma or Hyvä theming and checkout rework on the front end, and Varnish, Redis, OpenSearch and deployment tuning on the infrastructure side. The integrations complete the picture: invoicing, ERP, stock management, couriers, measurement and marketing channels.

Operations

Magento 2 maintenance

Security and version updates, backup checks, monitoring and prioritised bug fixing in a dedicated VPS environment, as a monthly package or by individual agreement.

Magento webshop development step by step

A well-run Magento 2 development is predictable: every stage ends with a tangible deliverable you can sign off. This is where most webshop projects slip: not on the coding but on expectations that were never clarified. With us a Magento webshop build breaks down into six stages from the survey to ongoing maintenance, with a time estimate for each. You will find the detailed breakdown in the project process section.

Important: the price of building a Magento 2 webshop is set not by the design but by the number of integrations and the state of the data to be migrated. Tidying up a messy old database is often more work than the import itself.

When do you need a Magento 2 developer, and when not?

Magento 2 returns on the investment when there is something to build on it. Thousands of products, several warehouses, complex pricing, B2B permissions, multiple languages or currencies, your own business logic: with these the limits of hosted platforms already cost measurable revenue, and investing in custom Magento development pays off.

For a simple store with a few dozen products, on the other hand, Magento 2 is oversized: the server requirements and the maintenance cost do not pay for themselves. In that case a WooCommerce or a hosted system is the more honest answer, and we say so at the survey, because the wrong platform is a loss for both sides.

How much does a Magento 2 webshop cost?

Rolling out a Magento 2 webshop typically runs between €5,000 and €150,000 net, depending on whether it is a store on standard foundations, a custom build, or a multi-country system with B2B features. The price is driven mainly by the product count, the volume of data to be migrated, the number of integrations and the custom business logic, not by the design. Ongoing maintenance is separate from this, as a monthly arrangement. Every project is quoted after an individual survey and agreement; the ranges below are for orientation, not an offer.

What drives the price?

The same sentence, I would like a Magento 2 webshop, can mean a €7,000 project or a €70,000 one. These are the factors that make the difference:

  • Product count and attribute complexity: there is an order-of-magnitude difference between 500 simple products and 50,000 products with variants.
  • The volume and quality of the data to be migrated: cleaning up a messy old database is often more work than the migration itself.
  • Number of integrations: every payment provider, courier, invoicing tool and ERP is its own round of development and testing.
  • Custom checkout and business logic: the stock Magento checkout attracts the most custom requirements.
  • Multistore, multiple languages and currencies: every additional store and language adds operational and content overhead.
  • ERP and warehouse system connection: two-way stock and order sync, with fault tolerance.
  • Depth of design: a customised ready-made theme or a fully bespoke front end.
  • Performance targets: keeping within the Core Web Vitals thresholds on a large catalogue is work of its own.
  • The state of the existing system: when taking over a half-finished or neglected project, the assessment is a phase of its own.

The ranges above are net and indicative. Every project is quoted after an individual survey and agreement; for an enterprise-scale rollout beyond the top range we give a custom quote.

Further reading: the webshop development prices 2026 article goes through the costs platform-independently, the AI visibility and GEO optimisation page shows how a webshop can get into the answers of ChatGPT and Google AI, and if you are still choosing a system, the Magento 2, WooCommerce, UNAS or Shoprenter comparison works out the three-year total cost of all four routes.

How does a Magento 2 project run?

Six stages from the survey to ongoing maintenance. The times given apply to a medium-sized rollout; the stages can partly overlap.

1

Survey and quote

1 – 2 weeks

We go through the product catalogue, the pricing and stock handling logic, the integrations needed and the state of the existing system. From that we write the quote with concrete deadlines and a price. This stage decides whether Magento 2 really is the right choice. If it is not, this is where we say so.

2

Architecture and server environment

1 week

We size the VPS from the expected catalogue size and traffic, set up the cache and search layers (Varnish, Valkey or Redis, OpenSearch) and stand up the staging environment. The decisions made here determine whether the store will cope with the load later.

3

Base system and data migration

2 – 6 weeks

Installation, branding, category structure, then moving over the products, variants, customers and past orders. 301 redirects are built for the old URLs so that search rankings are not lost. Most of the work is usually not the import itself but tidying up the old database.

4

Connecting the integrations

2 – 5 weeks

Payment provider (Barion, SimplePay, Stripe, PayPal), courier with pickup points (GLS, FoxPost, MPL), invoicing software with NAV Online Invoice reporting, and where needed an ERP or warehouse system connection. Every integration is its own round of development and testing, which is why their number stretches the deadline.

5

Performance, testing, measurement

1 – 3 weeks

Core Web Vitals tuning (LCP, CLS, INP), load testing for the expected peak traffic, finalising the indexing and cache strategy, and setting up measurement: Google Analytics 4, server-side tracking and conversion tracking. Without this the store works, but nobody knows how well.

6

Go-live and maintenance

ongoing

Switching to live operation, training the team on the admin interface, then a maintenance arrangement: security updates, version tracking, monitoring and bug fixing. A Magento 2 system stays stable for years only if this stage is not skipped.

Optimised for Magento 2  VPS hosting and server solutions

Why is a VPS server essential for a Magento 2 webshop?

Magento 2 is a resource-hungry, enterprise-grade e-commerce engine that was not built for shared hosting. Stable, fast operation needs dedicated resources, an optimised server environment and fine-tuned settings. A properly configured VPS server provides exactly that.
In a shared hosting environment Magento often becomes slow, can turn unstable under load and cannot make use of the technologies (cache, search engine, background processes) that deliver real performance. On a VPS, by contrast, we get full control over the system, so the shop can be tuned precisely to the business needs.

What does a properly configured Magento VPS give you?
  • Fast page loads even under heavy traffic
  • Stable operation during promotions, campaigns and seasonal peaks
  • Scalable resources (RAM, CPU, storage)
  • PHP, database and cache layers optimised for Magento
  • More secure operation in an isolated environment
A well-built VPS infrastructure makes a Magento webshop not only faster but also dependable as a business.

Why are we strong at Magento VPS setup?

For Magento webshops we do not use template servers. Every VPS is tailored to the specific shop: we take the product count, the traffic, the integrations and future growth into account.

We have experience in:
  • Server-side performance optimisation for Magento 2
  • Fine-tuning cache and background processes
  • Building stable, sustainable VPS environments
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting on live webshops

The goal is not that the webshop merely starts up, but that it runs reliably for years and the server never becomes the limit on growth.

Magento 2 versions and the support life cycle

Adobe gives every major version a three-year standard support window from its release. Security and quality fixes arrive during that period; afterwards the system still runs, but with known, unpatched security holes.

Latest
2.4.9
Released: May 2026
Support ends: May 2029

2.4.8
Support ends: April 2028

Support ends: April 2027
Expiring soon
2.4.6
Support ends: 11 August 2026
Expired
2.4.5 and below
No longer receives security fixes, an upgrade is recommended

What does this mean for a webshop owner?

If your store runs on 2.4.6 or older, support expires within days or has already expired. That does not mean an immediate outage, but it does mean that security holes found from now on stay unpatched, and the risk grows from the direction of payment providers and PCI compliance as well. A major version upgrade is planned work: it runs in a staging environment, with a compatibility check of the modules, and typically takes a few days, as opposed to the far more expensive later rebuild of a neglected system.

System requirements for the current versions

ComponentRecommended version
PHP8.3 vagy 8.4
DatabaseMySQL 8.4 vagy MariaDB 11.4
Search engineOpenSearch 3
CacheValkey 8, Varnish 7.7

These are not optional extras: Magento 2 is built on these components, and keeping them up to date is the responsibility of whoever runs the shop, not Adobe's. A maintenance package takes exactly this tracking off the company's shoulders.

Version data verified: 7 August 2026. The life cycle dates are set by Adobe's official software life cycle policy.

Frequently asked questions

Everything worth knowing about a Magento 2 webshop: price, timeline, platform choice, server requirements, Hungarian invoicing, migration, choosing a developer and speed optimisation.

Prices and timelines

How much does developing a Magento 2 webshop cost in Hungary?

+

Rolling out a Magento 2 webshop runs between €5,000 and €150,000 net. A store on standard foundations with a customised ready-made theme is €5,000–15,000, a shop with custom branding or migrated from another system is €15,000–45,000, and a complex B2B or multistore system starts at €45,000. The price is set by the product count, the volume of data to be migrated and the number of integrations, not by the design. Every project is quoted after an individual survey.

The price ranges of the whole webshop market in one place, in our webshop development prices 2026 article.

How long does a Magento 2 webshop rollout take?

+

A Magento 2 webshop on standard foundations is up in 3–9 weeks, a custom rollout or migration takes 9–20 weeks, and a complex, B2B or multistore system 3–9 months. What usually stretches the timeline is not development but the data migration and the integration of external systems (invoicing, ERP, courier).

How much does Magento 2 maintenance cost per month?

+

Ongoing Magento 2 maintenance typically runs between €150 and €2,500 net per month. The lower band covers security updates, backup checks and monitoring, the middle one version tracking and prioritised bug fixing, and the upper one also includes a monthly development budget and a quarterly technical audit.

Choosing a platform

Magento 2 or WooCommerce: which should I choose?

+

WooCommerce is for smaller, simpler webshops: it starts faster and cheaper and works excellently up to a few hundred products and moderate traffic. Magento 2 gains the advantage where thousands of products, several warehouses, multiple languages or currencies, complex pricing and B2B permissions are the requirement. The practical boundary is roughly where WooCommerce can only keep going by piling on plugins.

Magento 2 or Shoprenter and Unas: when is it worth switching?

+

Hungarian hosted shop engines (Shoprenter, Unas) give a fast start and cheap operation, but development freedom is limited: business logic the platform does not support cannot be implemented. It is worth moving to Magento 2 when a custom checkout, your own business logic, an ERP connection, several stores or international selling is the goal, or when the limits of the platform are already costing you revenue.

What is the difference between Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce?

+

Magento Open Source is the free, open-source edition with no licence fee, but with the cost of development, servers and maintenance. Adobe Commerce is the paid edition with an annual licence, which adds a built-in B2B module, content staging, advanced segmentation and vendor support. For the vast majority of Hungarian small and medium businesses the Open Source edition is enough.

Technical questions

What server does a Magento 2 webshop need?

+

Magento 2 does not run reliably on shared hosting; it needs a dedicated VPS or server. For a starting webshop 4 CPU cores, 8–16 GB RAM and SSD/NVMe storage is the sensible minimum, alongside a Varnish cache, Redis for sessions and caching, and the OpenSearch search engine. With a larger catalogue and high traffic these scale up proportionally.

How many products can Magento 2 handle?

+

In the right server environment Magento 2 handles hundreds of thousands of products reliably. The practical limit is not the product count but the number of attributes and variants, the indexing strategy and the search engine configuration. Above ten thousand products it is worth using OpenSearch-based search, a Varnish cache and scheduled indexing.

How long is Magento 2 supported and what comes after?

+

Magento 2 is developed and supported by Adobe, with regular security and functional releases. Version tracking is not optional: outdated versions run with known security holes and PHP compatibility becomes limited too. A maintained Magento 2 system runs for years without a major rebuild. That is precisely its main advantage over hosted platforms.

Hungarian specifics and migration

Does Magento 2 support Hungarian invoicing and NAV Online Invoice?

+

Yes. The Magento 2 core does not include Hungarian invoicing, but the local invoicing tools (Számlázz.hu, Billingo and others) can be connected over their APIs, and the NAV Online Invoice reporting then happens automatically through them. VAT rates, reverse charge and intra-EU sales are configurable in the Magento tax rule system.

Which payment and shipping providers can be connected in Hungary?

+

On the payment side Barion, SimplePay, Stripe and PayPal are the most common choices, and each has a Magento 2 module or a custom integration. For shipping, GLS, FoxPost and MPL can be connected with automatic labelling and a pickup point selector, and custom shipping logic (weight limits, free shipping thresholds, zoning) can be built as well.

How can you migrate from WooCommerce or Shoprenter to Magento 2?

+

A migration has three stages: extracting and cleaning the data from the old system, mapping it onto the Magento data model (products, variants, categories, customers, orders), then importing and verifying. Most of the work is usually not the import but tidying up the old database. The old URLs have to be preserved with 301 redirects, otherwise the rankings achieved in search are lost.

Choosing a Magento 2 developer and working together

How much does a Magento 2 developer cost?

+

Magento 2 development is better planned per project or on a monthly budget than from an hourly rate card. A full rollout runs between €5,000 and €150,000 net depending on complexity, while ongoing development and maintenance is usually covered by a monthly retainer. Hungarian Magento developer rates are considerably higher than the WordPress market level, because the system demands deeper PHP, data model and operations knowledge. Every project is quoted after an individual survey and agreement.

How should I choose a Magento 2 developer?

+

There are four things worth asking. One: do they have a live Magento 2 webshop to show as a reference, not just WooCommerce work. Two: how do they handle version upgrades — where the core files get rewritten, the next upgrade is where it stops. Three: who runs the server and what happens during a night-time outage. Four: who owns the code and the documentation when the collaboration ends. If there is no clear answer to these, the project gets more expensive later.

Can you take over our existing Magento webshop from another developer?

+

Yes, this is a common job. A takeover starts with a technical audit: we go through the Magento version, the installed and custom modules, the core modifications, the server environment and the backup regime. From that we produce a risk list and an ordered plan: what has to be fixed at once and what can wait. Even with an inherited, undocumented code base the further decay can be stopped; it just has to be scheduled realistically.

How is building a Magento webshop different from a template-based store?

+

With a template-based or hosted system the platform decides what is possible: business logic outside the configuration options cannot be implemented. Building a Magento webshop is the other way round: the system adapts to the business process, not the reverse. The price of that is a higher entry cost and a dedicated server, and in return custom pricing, B2B permissions, your own checkout and deep ERP integration all become possible.

Operation, speed and marketing

My Magento 2 webshop is slow: what can be done about it?

+

Slowness rarely comes down to a single cause. The most common factors are a missing or misconfigured Varnish cache, session handling without Redis, database-based search instead of OpenSearch, unoptimised images, too many installed third-party modules, and a live system left in developer mode. The fix starts with measurement: profiling shows whether the bottleneck is on the server, in the application or on the front end.

How SEO-friendly is Magento 2?

+

Magento 2 ships with a strong SEO toolkit: custom URL keys, canonical handling, meta templates, structured data and sitemap generation. In practice the problem is usually not the system but the duplicate URLs generated by layered navigation, slow category pages and missing product descriptions. These can be handled with configuration and content work, while improving Core Web Vitals comes down to server-side caching.

Can price comparison sites and Google Shopping be connected to Magento 2?

+

Yes. Magento 2 can generate product feeds for price comparison sites, Google Merchant Center and the Meta catalogue, with custom field mapping, category matching and scheduled refreshes. For measurement, GA4 e-commerce event tracking and the server-side Measurement Protocol can be connected as well, which noticeably improves the accuracy of ad conversions.

Is Magento 2 available in Hungarian?

+

Yes, Magento 2 is a multilingual system: with a Hungarian language pack both the storefront and the admin can be localised. The community translation is incomplete, so on live projects we refine the missing and mistranslated strings in a custom language file, especially in the checkout and the order e-mails, because those affect conversion directly.

What is the Hyvä theme and is it worth using?

+

Hyvä is a modern front-end layer replacing the default Luma theme: Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS take over from the heavy Knockout and RequireJS stack, giving considerably better Core Web Vitals scores and faster development. It carries a licence fee, and the front end of existing third-party modules often has to be ported to it. For a new Magento 2 build it is almost always worth it; on an existing store it is a judgement call.

PWA or a headless front end for Magento 2: when is it worth it?

+

A headless or PWA front end is justified when an app-like shopping experience, several presentation surfaces (web, mobile app, kiosk) or a highly custom front end is the goal. In return two layers have to be built and operated, which is noticeably more expensive. For most Hungarian webshops the Hyvä theme gives the better ratio: a modern, fast front end without headless complexity.

Is it still possible to move off Magento 1?

+

It is possible, and urgent: support for Magento 1 ended in 2020, and it has been running with known security holes ever since, which puts card and customer data at risk. The migration follows the same route as from other systems: extraction, mapping onto the Magento 2 data model, import, 301 redirects. The old theme and modules cannot be carried over, but the product and customer data can, in full.

Adobe Commerce in the cloud or Magento Open Source on your own server?

+

The Adobe Commerce cloud package bundles the licence and the infrastructure, but its annual fee is high for the scale of a Hungarian SME. In local practice Magento Open Source plus a dedicated, tuned VPS is the proven route: lower cost, full control, a Hungarian data centre. We provide server operation as a managed service, so the convenience of the cloud is there without the licence fee.

What is multistore and when is it worth it?

+

Multistore is a built-in capability of Magento 2: one installation can run several webshops with separate domains, languages, currencies and even different pricing, on a shared product base and admin. It pays off when you serve several brands or several countries: one maintenance stream, one stock pool, several stores. It is considerably cheaper than running separate systems.

Magento 2 glossary

The terms that come up most often, explained briefly, so a quote or a conversation with developers is never impenetrable.

EAV

Entity-Attribute-Value: the Magento data model, in which product properties are stored not in fixed columns but as freely extensible attributes. This is what makes the system flexible, and also why it needs a stronger server.

Indexer

Magento collects prices, stock and category assignments into pre-computed tables so the store responds fast. On a large catalogue indexing runs in scheduled mode, otherwise every change causes a slowdown.

Cron

The engine of scheduled background jobs: indexing, sending e-mail, promotions taking effect, feed generation. If cron does not run, the store appears to work but a lot of things quietly fail to happen.

Varnish

A full-page cache in front of the web server. The vast majority of visitors get a ready, stored page, so PHP and the database are never touched. With Magento 2 it is practically mandatory.

Redis and Valkey

In-memory caches for handling sessions and the internal cache. Valkey is the open-source continuation of Redis, and newer Magento versions recommend it.

OpenSearch

The engine behind the store search and the filters (layered navigation). Magento 2 does not run without it; newer versions build on OpenSearch instead of Elasticsearch.

Multi-Source Inventory (MSI)

Managing the stock of several warehouses or pickup points together. You can define which source fulfils an order, which is key when a physical shop and a webshop run side by side.

Staging and preview

Preparing and previewing scheduled content and price changes before they go live. A built-in feature of Adobe Commerce; under Open Source it can be replaced with a custom solution.

Attribute set

A bundle of properties assembled per product type: size and colour for a shoe, author and ISBN for a book. Without well-built attribute sets the filters and the search are unusable.

Hyvä

An alternative, significantly faster Magento front-end layer in place of the built-in Luma theme. It comes into play when the Core Web Vitals scores matter most.

Composer

The PHP package manager through which Magento and all its modules are installed and updated. It is the standard route instead of copying modules by hand, and it is what makes the composition of the system traceable.

Core Web Vitals

Google's three user experience metrics: LCP (when the main content appears), CLS (how much the page jumps around), INP (how quickly it responds to a click). For a webshop they are directly linked to conversion.
