How a Loxone system is put together

A Loxone smart home is one coherent system: wired Tree devices, wireless Air devices, extension modules, audio and access control all connect to the central Miniserver. Everything comes together in one place, which is why the functions genuinely work together.

The Miniserver is the brain of the system

All control comes together in a single hub. The Miniserver makes its decisions locally, without the cloud, so the smart home works even without an internet connection.

The hub of a complete smart home for larger houses, with Tree and Link bus connections and access from the app or the web.

A compact hub for flats and smaller houses, with built-in Tree and Air connectivity.

Tree devices

Tree is the wired bus developed by Loxone. Data and power run on a single green cable and the devices can be chained freely, so the wiring is considerably shorter than with conventional solutions.

Air devices

Air is the encrypted wireless technology of Loxone. It builds a smart home even where chasing or breaking into walls is not an option, and the devices also relay the signal to each other.

Air Base Extension

The wireless interface for the Miniserver; this is what brings Air devices into the system.

Smoke Detector Air

It watches for smoke and heat. On an alarm the whole house responds: the lights come on and the blinds go up.

Water Sensor Air

It reports a leak near the washing machine, the sink or the boiler, before serious damage is done.

Door and Window Contact Air

Opening detection for the alarm, and with a window open the heating switches off too.

Valve Actuator Air

Wireless control of radiator valves for retrofitted heating control.

Extension modules

The extensions chained onto the Link bus provide the inputs and outputs of the system. Only as many modules go into the cabinet as the house needs, and the system can be extended later.

Loxone communication technologies and extension modules

Besides Tree and Air, the Miniserver handles further buses and industrial standards, so lighting, heating, shading and metering can all be joined into a single system. Below we set out what each technology is for and which extension module builds it.

1. Communication technologies

Loxone Link

The dedicated extension bus of the Miniserver. Up to 30 Extensions can be chained onto it, over a total cable length of 500 metres.

Loxone Tree

A two-wire device bus that carries power in the same cable. Fifty devices and 500 metres per branch, in star or tree topology.

Loxone Air

An 868 MHz wireless network in which the devices relay each other's signal. For extending a system without breaking into walls.

KNX

Linking an existing KNX installation to the Loxone logic, so the devices already in place can stay where they are.

DALI

Addressable light control: brightness, colour temperature and fault reporting for each luminaire. For offices and larger buildings.

DMX

Control of RGB and RGBW LED strips, decorative and mood lighting over many channels.

Modbus RTU and TCP

Reading data from and controlling solar inverters, heat pumps, energy meters and industrial devices.

M-Bus

Automatic reading of water, gas and heat meters, for sub-metering and billing.

1-Wire

Affordable temperature and humidity sensors on a longer bus, for many measuring points.

EnOcean

Battery-free wireless switches and sensors that run on the energy of the button press.

RS232 and RS485

Connecting devices that use a serial protocol, boilers, projectors and bespoke industrial controllers for example.

IP network

Connecting cameras, MQTT devices and web APIs over the network, with virtual inputs and outputs.

2. Extension modules in the distribution board

The modules mount on a DIN rail and connect to the Miniserver over the Link bus. We only fit what the given building genuinely needs.

  • Tree Extension: two independent Tree branches, with up to 50 devices on each.
  • Air Base Extension: the wireless base station for Loxone Air devices.
  • Relay Extension: 14 volt-free relay outputs for larger loads.
  • Dimmer Extension: four dimming channels for mains-voltage luminaires, with phase control.
  • DI Extension: 20 digital inputs, with a pulse counter function as well, for S0 meters for example.
  • AI Extension: eight analogue inputs, four voltage and four current-loop channels.
  • AO Extension: four analogue outputs for valves, mixing valves and frequency converters.
  • DALI Extension: a full DALI line with up to 64 lighting addresses, also available in a smaller version.
  • DMX Extension: a DMX line for colour LED and decorative lighting.
  • KNX Extension: connects a KNX bus to the Miniserver.
  • Modbus Extension: reads and controls Modbus RTU devices.
  • M-Bus Extension: automatic reading of consumption meters.
  • 1-Wire Extension: 1-Wire sensors, typically for temperature measurement.
  • RS232 and RS485 Extension: serial devices with a bespoke protocol.
  • EnOcean Extension: receives battery-free wireless switches and sensors.
  • Multi Extension Air: a wireless input and output extension for places the cable does not reach.
  • IR Control Air: infrared control for air conditioners and AV equipment.
  • Manufacturer extensions: direct integration of Internorm, Fröling and Schüco devices.

Frequently asked questions about the Loxone smart home

We have collected what our clients most often ask about the Loxone system, from prices to retrofitting.

The price of a Loxone smart home depends on the size of the building and the functions you want. The main cost elements are the Miniserver, the extension modules, the sensors and the labour. After a survey we give you an itemised quote, and the system can be built out in stages, so you do not have to do everything at once.
Yes. With the wireless devices of Loxone Air, a smart home can be added to a finished, furnished property without breaking into walls or carrying out a major refurbishment. For a new build or a full refurbishment we recommend the wired Tree system.
Tree is the wired system from Loxone: for a new build it is the most dependable and, in the long run, the cheapest solution. Air is a wireless technology, ideal for retrofitting and refurbishment. The two can be combined within one system, and we plan that at the survey.
The Loxone Miniserver controls locally, on your own network, so every function keeps working during an internet outage; the system does not depend on the cloud. After a power cut the control comes back automatically and the settings are not lost. An internet connection is only needed for remote access.
No. Loxone is a one-off investment: the mobile app and local control are free of charge, with no compulsory cloud subscription. That is an important difference from smart home services billed monthly.
Loxone is a complete system in itself, with its own app, but voice control and smart device integration can be set up on request. We go through the specific options at the survey, as they depend on the devices you already have.
KNX is a manufacturer-independent standard, while Loxone is a complete system built on central logic that is quicker to configure and costs less. The two do not exclude each other: the Miniserver also handles KNX, DALI, Modbus and 1-Wire devices, so an existing KNX system can be extended with Loxone control.
The system works locally by design and the data is not stored in an external cloud. Remote access runs over an encrypted connection, with permissions managed per user. On installation we hand over secure default settings and we help with software updates as well.
Most of the saving comes from presence-based heating and cooling control, automatic shading and solar energy management. The exact figure differs from household to household, but the consumption metering in the system shows you where and how much you save.
A retrofit based on Air typically takes a few days. In a new build the wiring follows the pace of the construction, and the programming and training are the last step before handover. We give you a specific schedule at the survey.
Yes, Loxone is modular and can be extended with new rooms or functions at any time. We also take on the programming, extension and fault finding of systems installed by others, so you are not tied to a single company.
The system needs no day-to-day maintenance. Software updates bring new functions and security fixes; our maintenance service helps with installing them and with periodic inspections.
As early as possible, ideally before the electrical design. The wiring plan decides what can be controlled later and at what cost: Tree wiring planned in advance costs a fraction of a later conversion. We are happy to talk to your designer and your electrician directly.
The essentials are Tree cable running to the positions of the switches and sensors, and separately controllable circuits running to the distribution board for the blinds and the loads. We provide a wiring diagram for this that any electrician can follow. In a properly prepared house the system can be extended freely later on.
For a home, where comfort, a ready-made app and quick configuration matter, Loxone is the obvious choice. For an industrial setting, bespoke process control or large buildings, the freely programmable WAGO PLC is the right fit.
